It’s never too early to introduce positive thinking into one’s life. When children practise positive affirmations, they learn to embrace a positive attitude towards life. The more they practise, the sooner good values and a positive mindset will become engrained in their inner self. They will also build confidence and self-esteem as they grow with their daily practice.
To follow are a few simple affirmations for children:
- I am loved.
- I am safe.
- I am helpful.
- I am friendly.
- I am kind.
- I can do it.
- I am perfect just the way I am.
You may want to share these affirmations with your child by writing each one on a flash card. You might suggest that your child add a drawing to each flash card to help them personalize and internalize these positive affirmations.
As your child enters their teen years, their life situations will naturally become more complex. Their relationships, schoolwork, extra-curricular activities, and personal fears will seem overwhelming at times. Learning to navigate their range of emotions during these difficult times is by no means an easy task. Often we, as parents, feel helpless because nothing we say or do helps change their mood or attitude. That’s because, when it comes right down to it, the only person who can change someone’s mood is the person experiencing the mood swing. What we, as parents, can do is offer guidance and hope that they accept it.
Practising positive affirmations can and will help your teen rewire their brain to be happier. The more consistent they are with their practice, the more confident they will become at being able to handle life’s daily challenges.

Suggest that your teen place each of their chosen affirmations on a colourful sticky. Or, suggest they write their affirmations on plain stickies with colourful markers. Then have them place the stickies on a wall in their room. Arranging the stickies in a spot close to a light switch or lamp will help act as a reminder to practise the affirmations.
